We all need a little help from our FRIENDS!!

In 2005, the Friends of the Crittenden County Public Library was formed, and on Thursday, October 16, we are CELEBRATING!!

Join us at 6pm for refreshments and more, including announcing the winner of the 2025 Bookmark Contest! For more info about the contest, check at the library, or, if you're in school, check at CCES and CCMS/HS with your school librarians and art teachers!

Exciting things at the Library!

There are lots of exciting things going on at the library! If you haven’t already heard about the summer programs, just ask any one of the thirty or more kids who are participating in one or more of the programs.

Why, there’s even a Summer Reading Program for Adults!

ADULT SUMMER READING: In case you don’t already know, the adult Summer Reading Challenge began on June 1; the challenge is to read thirteen books over the summer. Even though you’d be starting late, you can still join by inquiring and then signing up, at the library. Prizes for those who complete the challenge successfully!

Friends of the Library News -- May 2025

One of the chief goals of the Friends group is to promote our library so, with that in mind, I’d like to remind you that the library has a lot of information that can be helpful for the different seasons. For example, free seed packets were available during the spring planting season.

There are currently some great information sheets available on composting which provide helpful information for the beginning gardener as well as those more seasoned.

Friends from the library will again provide funding for the children’s Summer Reading Program which consists of art and creative activities. The program begins June 10 ^th . (registration for program June 2 ^nd – 4 ^th ) Grades K-3 ^rd will meet on Tuesdays at 10:00 AM and Grades 4 ^th thru 8 ^th will meet on Fridays at 10AM. Call the library if you have questions or need additional information.

The Crittenden County Public Library is not only a place where one can find books of all genres but it is also a fantastic resource on a myriad of topics and for all ages.

You’ll want to plan to participate in the library’s next TRIVIA NIGHT, which is scheduled for FRIDAY, June 27 ^th at 7:00 PM.

The library also hosts several group meetings on a monthly or bi-monthly schedule such as Genealogy (Monthly); Hooks & Needles is normally scheduled twice a month, on the 2 ^nd and 4 ^th Tuesdays however, these meetings are suspended during the summer months and will resume in September.

The library’s Brown Bag Book Club meets monthly. Stop in the library to pick up a bookmark with a listing of books scheduled for discussion in the remaining months of 2025.

While you’re there also pick up a monthly calendar so you will have a full schedule of activities and meetings for that month. You can also call the library with your questions 270-965-3354.

Were you aware that our Crittenden County Public Library has a Bookmobile that travels around the county providing service to a variety of library customers?

WHAT??? …..You didn’t know?

The bookmobile is operated by Shawnee Pace. I asked if her name (Shawnee) had a story behind it and she said no that her mother just liked it.

A native of Livingston County, Shawnee spent 28 years working in the school system there. She also spent three years working in the library in Livingston County. She retired in May 2023 and, at that time, came to Crittenden County Library to operate the bookmobile.

Shawnee likes to read, loves to travel and is especially fond of the beach. She and her husband Steve have three children, nine grandchildren, two great- grandchildren and four bonus children (cousins that live with them.)

The bookmobile goes out on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week. In addition to Marion, she also covers outlying areas such as Tolu, Dycusburg, Mattoon, and Tribune.

The bookmobile carries in the neighborhood of 300-400 books. The majority of these are children’s books. The bookmobile has shelves on two sides and children are able to walk through, scanning the shelves as they go. On a good day Shawnee will check out over 100 books, an O.K. Day would have 75 -100 check outs.

Friends of the Crittenden Co. Public Library - March 2025

Been to the Library lately?

If not, you've likely missed out on some good books ...

NEW books with titles that will thrill, educate, challenge, and excite you are filling the New Release Shelves. If you love books, then you really NEED to stop in and see what you've been missing at the Crittenden County Public Library.

In addition to the New Release shelves, there is also an area displaying the work of local authors. Be sure to check out this area the next time you're in the library.

You'll find late issues of your favorite magazines and periodicals displayed close to the comfortable seating area where you can relax and spend some quiet time reading. You'll also find displays throughout the library that provide information about upcoming local programs, events, or occasions.

The Crittenden County Public Library is a fantastic asset to the citizens of the county. Many library programs such as reading programs for all ages, author visits, participation in special holiday celebrations, prizes, decorations, and event costs are funded by Friends of the Crittenden County Public Library (FOCCPL).

For example, Friend's volunteers gave away children's books and candy on Halloween. They also provided funds for the new reading table in the children's area. The costs of bringing in Smokey Bear and other costumed characters is provided by the Friends group, too. Prizes for Summer and Winter reading challenges, both adults and children, are provided by the FOCCPL.

Funds that support the library are raised by the Friends group through planning, coordinating, and staffing the book sales in the spring and fall each year. There is also a booth at the local vendor mall, Marion & Company, where books, DVDs, Videos, and other items are sold. (Need a "Book Nerd" shirt? Check out the booth!)

In addition, Friends also host fun public events at the library such as the popular Trivia Night, scheduled every few months. NOTE: The first Trivia Night of 2025 was held on Friday, March 14. We had a good crowd and there were several teams. The winning team was called "The Librarians + 1" and it consisted of library employees. Based on their knowledge and skill in trivia, we certainly have reason to be proud of them.

You'll soon be hearing more about the book sale that is scheduled for late April. You certainly don't want to miss it.

Our library is a wonderful resource and it is filled with books and other forms of information that will inspire and motivate you as well as s imply making your life more enjoyable. The library staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. If you haven't already done so, please stop in, say hello, and look around at the treasures just waiting on the shelves for you to explore.

New Staff at CCPL!

You may have noticed some new/old faces around CCPL in March!

Regina Merrick is back!
After a few years off, Regina has returned as the Director of the Crittenden County Public Library! She's excited to be back, and looking forward to working alongside some great ladies.

Returning Children/Youth Services Librarian, Tabby Tinsley, is also back!
Another familiar face is Tabby (Padgett) Tinsley! Tabby has worked as a library clerk, the Bookmobile Librarian, and Children's Librarian before she took a break, and now she's back and more than ready to jump into planning Summer Reading! Story Hour is still going on on Fridays at 10, and Lego Club Tuesdays after school!

Circulation/Media Librarian, Casey Farmer, returns to the front desk!
Casey is working hard to get us new books on the shelves, and is doing a great job spreading the word on social media. Follow us on Facebook -- and come in to check out a book or DVD!

Bookmobile Librarian Shawnee Pace and Library Page Audra Hunt round out our staff!
You may not see much of Shawnee when you come by the library, because she's usually out and about delivering books or ushering kids on and off the bookmobile! When she's at the front desk, you can count on a smile as she helps you find what you need.

Audra is excellent at her job at the circulation desk. Always willing to lend a hand whether it is finding materials or putting in requests for inter-library loan, Audra is instrumental in making the library run efficiently!

The Staff of CCPL welcomes you to the library, and hope that you never hesitate to come in and ask for help when needed! Thanks for being a part of our library family.
