In addition to several stops where children are home-schooled, she stops at two day care centers in Marion. She also stops at the local Elementary School where pre-school students are able to choose books. Another stop is at the nursing home in Marion where she will deliver books to patients who request them.
The bookmobile travels out into the county on Thursday each week and there Shawnee serves around sixty book lovers. Many of these customers are elderly or they may be handicapped. Some simply don’t have any form of transportation.
Shawnee has gotten to know her customer’s favorite authors or genre and she will often suggest, or pick, books for them. Customers are always excited to see that bookmobile roll up to their house and see Shawnee’s smiling face as she climbs out of the driver’s seat.
There’s only one problem with the bookmobile…..it’s starting to have some issues and will need to be replaced before long. The Friends of the Library have started checking into grants and/or other resources that may be available when the time comes to get a new bookmobile. We would be happy to hear any suggestions you might have as to possible resources.
The next time you see Shawnee in the library or scooting around the county in the bookmobile, say Hi and tell her how proud we are of the good work she’s doing.
